C&G’s Guide to Preparing Your Home for Autumn

While the sun is still shining in Bayside, now is the perfect time to prepare your home for the chillier months ahead. Known for its unpredictable weather, Melbourne can transform into a winter not-so-wonderland overnight. In today’s blog, C&G present eight simple tips to prepare your home for Autumn, so you can welcome Winter with open arms – and woolly blankets!

1. Heating system

The best way to prepare for cooler weather is to check your heating system. After months of hot weather, vents are usually covered in dust, dirt or worse - mould! Have your vents and heaters cleaned and dusted before using.

2. Check windows and doors

Check for any cracks in windows and doors – especially doors and windows heavily used in Summer. By sealing cracks, you’ll save on your energy and heating bills while preventing chilly wind seeping though.

3. Clear gutters and drainpipes

By clearing out leaves from outside gutters and drainpipes you’ll prevent clogging and indoor flooding – plus no-one wants to be cleaning outside when the weather turns chilly.

4. Think about outdoor furniture

Some outdoor furniture can endure cold weather – however not all furnishings are winter-proof. Pool toys and summer furniture should be stored away. If storage is limited, use waterproof furniture covers or tarps to protect furniture and outdoor equipment.

5. Smoke detectors

Something that should be checked seasonally, always check your smoke detectors and fire alarms. Change batteries if required.

6. Prep your garden

Prep your garden by fertilising your grass and dirt. A good fertiliser will prevent winter damage and help your garden grow back quickly when Spring comes around.

7. Freshen up your doona and woollen blankets

If you have stored away woollen blankets and doonas, have them dry-cleaned in time for cooler nights. Having fresh woollens will help prepare you and your family for the winter weather to come.

8. Buy winter accessories
