C&G’s Guide to Pool and Spa Registration

Tips & Advice

From the 1st of December 2019, the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) introduced new legislation to improve pool and spa safety in residential homes. In response to the ongoing pandemic, there will be an extended deadline for owners to register their pool or spa before the 1st of November 2020. This latest C&G blog unpacks what you need to know before completing your registration.

Who needs to register?

If your property contains a pool or spa capable of holding more than 300mm of water, you will need to register. These include permanent pools, above ground pools, indoor pools, hot tubs, bathing or wading pools and some relocatable pools. The exceptions will be fountains, fish ponds and bathroom spas or baths.

If you are renting a property that contains a pool or spa, then your landlord will be responsible for registering. Owner’s Corporation will register a pool or spa located on common property.

How do I register?

You will need to contact the council in which your property is located. You may have to create an account to access online services, and pay the relevant registration fee. Your council will then confirm your registration and provide details to inform your next steps.

What else do I need to know?

To maintain water safety for all Victorians, owners will need to arrange an inspection of their pool or spa safety barrier every four years. You will receive a Pool and Spa Barrier Compliance Certificate which also needs to be lodged with council every four years. This inspection is often arranged with a private inspector or building surveyor after registration, and your council will send relevant information detailing which barrier standard applies to your property.
