C&G's Guide to Keeping Your Home Cool in Summer
The warmer weather is here, and while we’re more than glad to hang up our woolies and enjoy longer days and balmy nights, there is a fine line between hot and too hot! In today’s blog, C&G share our top tips on keeping your home cool this summer.
Block Heat Entry Points
Up to 30% of unwanted heat comes from windows. Opt for black out blinds or heavier curtains to absorb heat and keep your rooms cool – particularly on north facing windows. When it’s particularly hot outside, keep windows closed to avoid heat making its way through the cracks.
Close Off Unused Rooms
Avoid cool air escaping into unused spaces by closing doors when you leave a room. Encouraging air flow is easier in a smaller space, so confine your cool zones to select areas of the home to maximise cooling power.
Switch Bedding
Ditch the polyester and opt for more breathable fabrics like bamboo. It’s also worth ditching your winter doona for something lighter, to help you get some much-needed rest on muggy nights. There are also plenty of innovative pillows and bed coolers to help turn down the temperature on your sleep.
Seasonalise Your Ceiling Fans
Hot weather hack – switch your ceiling fans to a counter-clockwise direction. Doing so pushes how air out and cool air down towards you. In winter, opt for clockwise rotations, as this pushes the hot air down and the cool air out. Trust us.
Avoid the Oven
Using the oven during summer can make your kitchen intolerably warm. Try cooking outdoors on your barbecue, or opting for cooler meals like salads and grazing plates. Not only do you keep your home cool, you switch up your meal repertoire and try new things. Cooking and eating outdoors can also be a refreshing change of scenery for you and your family to connect and unwind.
