C&G’s Guide to Hosting Outdoor Gatherings

Tips & Advice

The warmer weather has finally arrived, and Melburnians are excited to spend our well-deserved holidays surrounded by loved ones! With restrictions on household gatherings relaxed, it’s time to fire up the BBQ, dust off the folding chairs, and enjoy some alfresco dining in the warmth of Summer. In this latest C&G blog, we round up some handy tips for throwing a memorable outdoor party!

Decide on a theme

Once you’ve chosen your theme, you’ll be able to source matching dinnerware and decorations to create a consistent look and set the tone for the event. Experiment with loud tropical colours if you’re hosting a large festive party, or make it a ‘white Christmas’ if you’re expecting a smaller intimate gathering. Place matching centre pieces on the dining table, and perhaps string up some lanterns if you have a leafy backyard. When your guests arrive they’ll be immediately wowed by the gorgeous set up you have prepared.

Prepare the menu

Have fun with different recipes, depending on your theme! Sharing platters are always a big winner, as well as seasonal classics such as salads and fresh fruit platters. Have a variety of refreshing drinks available as well, especially if it’s a particularly sultry afternoon. Firing up the BBQ is also a great way to prepare dinner while socialising with your guests!

Think about comfort

While it’s important your guests have plenty of room to eat, also set up some outdoor lounge areas so they can mingle! Have plenty of cushions and pillows to create comfortable spaces where everyone can relax and soak in the warm Summer air.

Keep unwanted guests away

Everyone wants to socialise during Summer, and that includes unwanted pests! Unfortunately, insects such as mosquitos love to make an appearance around dusk. When shopping for supplies, don’t forget to pick up some trusty insect repellent and covers for your food and drinks. Set up plenty of rubbish bins to keep your dining area tidy and clean, preventing insects from helping themselves. If you have a portable or tabletop fan, they are also helpful for deterring mosquitos and bugs.

Make a playlist

Have a curated mix of Christmas tunes and classic favourites playing in the background. Ensure the playlist also covers at least a few hours to avoid any awkward silences. Lastly, do be mindful of your neighbours and keep an ear on your volume level!
