Think Pink

Pink your favourite colour?  Well, it should be on October 25th - the official Pink Ribbon Day. Today at Chisholm & Gamon we are basking in a pink glow and throwing our support behind this wonderful charity event, raising funds to help the Cancer Council research for a cure and provide support services to those suffering from cancer illness.

It’s a scary statistic – every day in Australia, approximately 50 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.  By participating in Pink Ribbon Day, we can help bring attention to this shocking statistic and raise money for cancer research that will hopefully one day lead to a cure.

There are a few ways in which every woman can lower their risk of cancer.  First and foremost - quit smoking!  You will feel immediate health benefits and lower your risk of developing breast cancer – so for the support you need, call the National Quitline on 13 QUIT.

All of us should have a good relationship with our GP’s.  The importance of a good relationship means not missing regular medical examinations or feeling uncomfortable when due for a pap smear.  Early cancer detection improves the chances of successful treatment and long-term cancer survival.  If you’re not comfortable with your GP – find another you click with. In Port Phillip we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to fine GP’s.

Living in Australia has it positives – lots of sunshine and BBQs in summer.  We learn about being sun smart early and this lesson is for life – Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek (shade) and Slide (on sunglasses).  Always reduce your risk of skin cancer, start early and live longer.

It has been proven time and again that keeping active is important to living a long, healthy life. Daily moderate exercise of approximately 30mins will improve your health and 60mins per day can help reduce your risk of developing some cancers.  Pick a sport you enjoy and make new friends in the meantime.

Keeping fit will naturally lead to maintaining a healthy weight. Stay within a healthy weight with a mixture of sport, a healthy diet and limited alcohol consumption. Many of us are unaware of the fact alcohol is a significant risk factor for some cancers, including breast cancer – so keep an eye on the tipple.

There are several ways you can support Pink Ribbon Day – why don’t you host a “girls night in” or sell pink merchandise?  Volunteering for Pink Ribbon Day or holding a Pink Ribbon Fundraiser are also worthwhile ideas.  Cancer touches many lives – and we need many hands and hearts to support this worthwhile cause.  Jump on the Pink Ribbon website to donate today.
