Local Community

The annual Melbourne International Comedy Festival will launch next Thursday, 26th March, for a month of shows from over 450 comedy acts. As the third-biggest comedy festival in the world, Melbourne International Comedy Festival will host an incredible array of talent – from international stars to local and emerging comedians. In today’s blog, C&G highlights a few upcoming shows to help you get your laugh on this year.

If you’re up for catching the big names, there are some fantastic International Shows on offer. Festival favourite Stephen K Amos will return with his new show, What Does the K Stand For?,  during which the beloved British comedian will entertain with stories from his childhood. Sara Pascoe, past guest of BBC’s QI and Never Mind the Buzzcocks will make her Australian debut with Sara Pascoe Vs The Truth – a smart and side-splitting spin on existentialism.

Of course, the festival is a huge celebration of home-grown talent. Household names like Cal Wilson, Colin Lane, Dave Hughes, Dave Thornton, Frank Woodley, Wil Anderson and John Safran will each bring to stage their latest shows. In that wonderful way that comedians can, many of this year’s shows will flip otherwise unsavoury subjects on their head to be examined in a light-hearted, honest and fun way. Writer and comedian Catherine Deveny will bring to life the nefarious world of Internet misogyny and troll culture in The Trollhunter, whilst Em Rusciano will combine a string of true comedic tales and a serious set of pipes in Divorce: The Musical!

With a median ticket price of $27, MICF is also fantastically affordable in the realm of festival prices. An even better way of getting more bang for your buck is to check out some of the emerging talent Melbourne has to offer, with tickets usually ranging from $10-$20. Comedian and scientist Tom Lang’s Love Factually looks at Mother Nature’s ‘seedy side’, YouTube personality Tom McLean takes to the stage with Ghosts are Real, and in another comical music delight Al Newstead and Anna O’Bryan will present Al & Anna’s Musical Rant.
