Down the Rabbit Hole: Melbourne Nightmarket Adventures This Winter

Local Community

Melbourne’s like one giant Hatter’s Tea Party – we’re all a little mad here, aren’t we? So much so that even in the cold, rainy winter weather we decide to venture out (at night!) into Melbourne’s CBD to discover new venues, food experiences and fine folks. Beginning this month and continuing on into August, there are several night-time and unique-venue markets that C&G have unearthed to reveal to you today.

Taking place this Sunday 20th July is the Melbourne Design Market. This event is ‘underground’ (quite literally), held at the Federation Square carpark.  The event is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, and prides itself on bringing innovative design from local makers to the wider community, encouraging undiscovered creatives to launch new products and display their wares. From jewellery and fashion to homewares and furniture, the 50-odd stalls are certain to have something that takes your fancy.

Next on the program of Melbourne adventure is the 1878 Luna Winter Night Markets at the Queen Victoria Market. Stretching on into late August, the Winter Market takes place every Wednesday night – presenting a slightly different offering from the usual Queen Vic fare of fresh food and deli goods. The Night Market takes a more whimsical and imaginative approach, with plenty of handmade crafts, clothes, cosmetics and body care items for sale.

But don’t expect to go hungry! The smorgasbord of food will definitely make your stomach grumble, with something for both the sweet tooth and savoury foodies out there. To cap off the night, musical acts and performers of all kinds will be roving the market to set your toes tapping and hands clapping.

Running for the first time this year, The European Night Market kicks off tomorrow night at Madame Brussels Lane. The market - inspired by the iconic Christmas markets held throughout Europe - opens at 4pm and runs late into the night, packing the laneway with delicious food and gifts, including German beer and sausages, Italian dolci, live music and pop-up stalls.

“…You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.”
