C&G’s Guide to the Melbourne Festival

October 6-23 sees Melbourne play host to a festival which celebrates our culture and community. The Melbourne Festival features events across the city and surrounds, including music, art and dance. In today’s blog, C&G have rounded up our must-see festival events, so you won’t miss a thing.

A celebration of the most liveable city in the world, the Melbourne Festival runs for just over two weeks during the balmy spring month of October. With plenty going on in every corner of the city, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Stay Up Late at The Toff in Town

Catering to Melbourne’s night owls, Swanston Street’s The Toff in Town will be keeping its doors open into the early hours throughout the festival. Those who aren’t ready to call it a night after the last event can pitch up and share their opinions over Thai snacks in the cool surrounds of the bar’s impressive interior – and enjoy the decadent cocktail menu!

Nab a Freebie

Would it be a festival without a freebie?! Of course not, and the Melbourne Festival doesn’t disappoint. If you’re feeling brave and up for some audience participation, Echo of the Shadow is a free experiential theatre experience based on the novel ‘The Shadow’ by Hans Christian Andersen. If you’d rather sit back and be captivated, head to ACMI for Creating Worlds – a discussion with immersive theatre producers, Enrique Vargas and Lynette Wallworth, and discover the secrets behind the works of art. There’s heaps of other free events going on, so check out the program and fill those Sunday afternoons.

Watch the Fire Run

Les Tambours de Feu will leave you amazed. One of the world’s most stunningly dangerous displays of art is the fire run, known as the Correfoc. The streets of Melbourne will come alight with the blaze of head to toe pyrotechnic costumes as they glide through the darkness in a curious clash of art and performance.

Relive the talents of David Bowie

In a stunning tribute to the late David Bowie, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is performing 3 shows throughout the festival. In their own unique style, the MSO will perform a selection of David Bowie compositions in their own unique style. This event has been popular, so snap up your tickets while you still can.

There’s so many other great events happening throughout the festival, from virtual reality theatre in Collisions to a fleet of artistically designed trams to steal your imagination. Check out the full program to make sure you don’t miss out.
