C&G’s Guide to Online Events in August

Local Community

Before we know it, August has arrived! It has undoubtedly been challenging for many Victorians, as more restrictions have been introduced across metropolitan Melbourne. Thankfully, the arts and culture industry has soldiered on, with many events transitioning into digital form to be enjoyed safely at home. Looking for some lockdown entertainment while also supporting our local creatives? C&G’s latest blog rounds up the best online festivals and events happening this month.

Melbourne International Film Festival

6-23 August

This year’s event, entitled MIFF 68½, will be streaming Australia-wide throughout August. Film buffs who have exhausted their Netflix library – this is the perfect event for you! There are over 100 films from both Australian and international filmmakers, as well as a freely accessible selection of shorts. The festival organisers are excited to introduce the event to new audiences, with the hope they can discover some new interests! Follow this link for more details.

Melbourne Writers Festival

7-16 August

Melbourne Writers Festival is the biggest celebration of words and stories, and is rebranding as MWF Digital this year. You’ll still experience the same thought-provoking author panels and workshops, with a ‘pay what you can’ ticketing system. This means you can contribute anything from $0-50 to access the program. Your contribution will keep MWF going strong, as they continue providing a platform for experienced and emerging writers to share their stories and inspire conversation. Check out the program here.

NGV Friday Nights

Ongoing

Remember the good old days of finishing your week at NGV Friday Nights? In an effort to keep things ‘normal’ NGV will be broadcasting free musical performances on their website! You can view fashion designer and DJ Soju Gang right now, with a performance from DJ General Feelings on the 14th of August! More details here.

Ballarat Virtual Winter Festival

Until 31 August

This is a great idea for keeping the little ones entertained! Unfortunately, Melburnians won’t be able to travel to Ballarat for the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean Ballarat can’t come to us. A virtual Ballarat means you can take a digital stroll through the Eureka Centre mazes, collect gold in fun Sovereign Hill games, and download some colouring pages and puzzles for the week ahead. Check it out here!
