One of the Southside’s most popular film festivals is back for 2017! The Jewish International Film Festival is a nation-wide celebration of the remarkable diversity of Jewish culture and storytelling. Head along to the Classic Cinemas, Elsternwick from the 25th of October to the 22nd of November to enjoy an incredible program of Australian premieres and screenings. Whether it’s documentary and history you seek or you’re ready to lose yourself in fiction, C&G have picked our top screenings to help you plan your festival experience.

Curious George – Kids Film Screening

Bring the entire family along for a nostalgic screening of the animated feature film, Curious George (2006). Kids, parents and grandparents will enjoy the mischievous adventures of this naughty little monkey as he navigates a new country, America! As a special treat, you can join PJ Library from 10am in the Classic Cinemas foyer beforehand for craft activities and fun! All tickets $10.

Keep the Change, 2017

Winner of Best Narrative Feature at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Keep the Change is an endearing romantic comedy about people navigating the difficulties of a relationship. Authentic and optimistic, this film is one of the most heartwarming screened at the festival! Prior to the screening, Access Bakery will be popping up in the Classic Cinemas foyer with a selection of delicious treats for sale - and Madeleine Ryan, writer and actor, will introduce the screening!

Moritz Daniel Oppenheim: The First Jewish Painter, 2016 

This insightful documentary explores the life work and lasting impact of artist Moritz Daniel Oppenheim across Germany, France and Israel. Moritz Daniel Oppenheim is the ‘painter of the Rothschilds and the Rothschild of painters’, and was the first Jewish painter of the modern era. History buffs are sure to enjoy a Q&A with the Director of Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, Isabel Gathof, for additional insight!

Murder in Polná, 2016

A big hit in the Czech Republic, Murder in Polná is a riveting historical miniseries based on the Hilsner Affair, a contested criminal case in Czechoslovakia. After a young seamstress is found dead in a small village on Easter Sunday 1899, the absence of blood at the crime scene leads investigators to believe that the murder was part of a Passover ritual. This dramatic murder mystery may not be for the faint-hearted, but guarantees thrills for those who dare!
