To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, The German Film Festival 2019 will be screening more than 30 films at this year’s festival. With local Bayside cinemas screening the festival’s program until June 12th, C&G unpack the best flicks to enjoy – Ja der Film!

1.    Tear Down The Walls

To mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this year’s German Film Festival will present three films to celebrate the reunification of Germany while encouraging thought-provoking discourse surrounding the Berlin Wall. The films presented include Adam & Evelyn, Gundermann & Sealed Lips.

2.    Opening Night Film

From the director of Germany’s all-time biggest grossing movies, comes Balloon a movie thriller based on a chilling historical event. The movie recreates the story of two men in East Germany at the height of the Cold War who build a hot air balloon in secret to carry their families over the border. This must-see film will kickstart the festival and is also the Australian premiere.   

3.    Kino For Kids

Cinema Kino will be presenting a kid’s category for German films. Films include, Help, I Shrunk My Parents a role reversal based on Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, Invisible Sure, Goodbye Berlin, Mountain Miracle and more. The films are a great way to introduce the kids to European cinema, while learning a little German – but not to worry, English subtitles are provided for all the films!

4.    Mack The Knife

The special event of the festival is a musical drama piece called Mack the Knife. This film is based on the huge success of Bertolt Brecht’s 1928 film Threepenny Opera.  Be transformed to the Roaring Twenties, with luscious costumes and energetic performances while learning about society and capitalism in Berlin.
