What’s Cool In June – C&G Culture Guide

Local Community

Well, May is done and dusted – and we’ve certainly been rather spoilt with some unseasonably balmy weather all through Autumn. As experienced Melbournites, however, we can’t help but anticipate the overcast skies and bitter cold our city is famous for.  Luckily we’ve a world of wonderful Winter events coming our way this June. Today, C&G takes a look at a few.

The annual Melbourne Winter Masterpieces program has returned to the National Gallery of Victoria, presenting a collection of over 100 pieces from Madrid’s Museo del Prado in the much-anticipated Italian Masterpieces exhibition. The exhibition will also host a Lecture Series on Italian art and Spanish patronage, running Saturdays through to June 28th – make sure to take a peek at the program as there are some wonderful discussions taking place. Gallery-goers can also catch a musical masterpiece at Friday Nights from June 27th, kicking off with emerging artist Kirin J Callinan.

For a rollicking day of wine and geekery, you really can’t miss Game of Rhones, which returns to Melbourne (St Kilda Town Hall) on June 16th after a hugely successful tour last year. A celebration of the classic grape varieties of the Rhone Valley in France, Game of Rhones pits Shiraz against Viognier, Grenache against Marsanne in a playful take on HBO’s wildly popular Game of Thrones. Your ticket will win you a taste of each competing wine, a chance to vote for the best variety and a ‘hearty feast’ to round it all off. Wine is coming. Buy tickets here.

In another return this winter, Trailer Park will once again set up at Village Melbourne (formerly Belgian Beer Café Bluestone) in a round-up of some of Melbourne’s best food trucks. Hardly the hotdog vans of yore, Melbourne’s food truck culture is fresh, varied and gourmet. Trailer Park will run weekends through winter, with rotating trucks each month in Village Melbourne’s cosy, heated courtyard. June will see New Orleans soul food at Gumbo Kitchen, Vietnamese inspired street food at Lil Nom Noms, the cantina-style taqueria Chingon and freshly-torched crème brûlées at The Brûlée Cart.
