The Best Real Estate from Our Favourite Christmas Movies

It’s Christmas! That means evenings on the couch watching our favourite festive movies without a care in the world. But, you know us – at C&G, we’ve always got real estate on our minds! So today, we’ve rounded up the best real estate spotted in our favourite Christmas movies.

The Quaint Surrey Cottage in The Holiday

The snow-covered English countryside paints a picture of relaxation, as Cameron Diaz seeks ever-elusive peace and quiet. She escapes from her modern LA pad, and swaps Hollywood for holly-decked hallways. The remote location, gingerbread-style exterior, open fire and visits from the unassumingly handsome Jude Law make this the perfect holiday rental. The village shots were filmed in the Surrey town of Godalming, but the house itself was a movie set. It was built in just a few short weeks, but it beautifully captured the serenity and timeless charm of an old English property at Christmas.

The Contemporary LA Pad in The Holiday

Cameron Diaz looked like a proper Bayside girl to us in this open plan, swimming-pool boasting LA mansion. A morning clap of your hands and your blinds roll up, the lights come on and you dance to Walking on Sunshine from the comfort of your extra-large queen bed. The residence’s impressive exterior, complete with video gateway entry, large lap pool and lounge area, place this property at the top end of the elite house hunter’s wishlist.

Kevin McAllister’s Chicago Mansion in Home Alone

It’s taken over two decades, but people are only now beginning to wonder how the McAllister’s managed to afford the enormous red-brick Georgian home in Chicago – and that holiday to Paris. Complete with an infinitely slide-able staircase, Christmas lights bright enough to beef up anyone’s electricity bill, and a respectful four bedrooms and four bathrooms, the ‘mini-mansion’ sold to new owners in 2012 for over USD$1.5m

The Classic ‘Project’ in It’s a Wonderful Life

George and Mary Bailey may as well have been young Melbournians looking to break into the property market when they signed up for the ‘draughty old house’ in Bedford Falls. Despite the entire town being a Californian film set purpose-built for the movie, the final scene of this iconic Christmas movie brings even the Grinchiest to tears. The couple’s reno saw them transform their weathered property into a beautiful home, a place to live happily ever after.

Susan’s Dream House in Miracle on 34th Street

The dream home in Cape Cod, Long Island was Susan’s one true wish, and true to form, Kris Kringle made that wish come true. The real property is located in Port Washington, New York. Its greying stone and white cladding appeared humble on the outside, but the inside saw Susan squeal with delight – and will we ever forget seeing Kris Kringle’s cane propped up against the open fireplace? Real estate is a Christmas wish come true – whether on Long Island or in Elwood! The updated version of the movie, released in 1994, sees Susan wish for a little yellow house – which recently sold in Illinois. She lucked out in the remake, as the home was lavishly furnished with everything you’d need for a magical family Christmas.
