Making the most of your Labour Day weekend

Local Community

Who doesn’t love a long weekend? You don’t even have to wait until Easter to get one either -  next Monday, March 14 is
Labour Day. It’s a public holiday for Victoria, when we celebrate the anniversary of union protests that landed us the eight-hour work day. C&G hopes your long weekend is a relaxing one, and have compiled some of the top activities in the Bayside area and surrounds for those wishing to make the most of it.

Moomba Festival

Birrarung Marr

The banks of the Yarra will be filled with happy crowds from the 11th to 14th of March – with the festival finale taking place on Labour day itself. Moomba Festival has been around for sixty years, and welcome all ages in celebrating Melbourne culture at its best. The famous Moomba Parade will be headed up by this year’s monarchs, followed by community floats, performance artists and dance troupes. Alpine will play on the main stage at Birrarung Marr at 8.30pm, and there will be fireworks every night of the festival

Fashion Film Series (VAMFF)

Federation Square

The outdoor cinema at Federation Square is showcasing a series of short, fashion-themed films until March 13, so Labour Day eve will be your last chance to catch the action. If you can’t make it, you can stream it with FedCam, a live broadcast from the event.

While you’re in the city enjoying the fashion happenings, you might also like to head to NGV and check out 200 Years of Australian Fashion, a new exhibition showcasing two centuries of national style.

The Alliance Francaise French Film Festival

Palace Cinemas, Brighton Bay

The Palace Cinemas are located on the Bay Street shopping strip, a popular entertainment and dining precinct for the Bayside area. With a well-stocked café and bar, handmade choc-tops and a premium selection of beer and wine, it’s a great place to make the most of the French Film Festival – and it’s open all long-weekend! Shopping

Bayside Shopping Centre

Bayside Shopping Centre will be open from 10am until 5pm on Labour day, as well as regular weekend trading hours in the lead up to labour day. From homewares and manchester to fashion, electronics and more, it’s a great place for a relaxing wander. With over a dozen food retailers, why not make a day out of it and enjoy lunch as well? Cap off the afternoon with a massage from Endota Spa, whose professional therapists provide a sensory and relaxing experience for your shopped-out shoulders.
