Investment In The Eye of the Beholder – Melbourne Art Fair

Local Community

When thinking about your real estate investment strategy and investing for the future, the appreciation of art is not normally what springs to mind. After further consideration, you may find they have more in common than you imagined! At C&G, we can relate to admiring eloquently designed architecture and elegant abodes – and we equally have an appreciation for fine modern artworks that give a home its defining spirit. Investing in art can be just as rewarding as real estate, and where better to begin your collection that at this year’s Melbourne Art Fair?

The Melbourne Art Fair has been a staple of the local art calendar for 25 years now, and occurs annually during Art Week. Hosted in the Royal Exhibition Building (an artwork unto itself!), the week begins on the 13th of August with the Vernissage- a preview of the artworks available and a chance to rub shoulders with prominent artists, gallerists, collectors and enthusiasts alike, fuelled on by canapés and vino.

Not only does it showcase over 300 local and international artists over 70 gallery showcases, the Art Fair includes several informative lectures and forums, experimental project rooms and performances, and art talks and walks. Brand new to this year’s festival is MAF’s video program, featuring four themed exhibitions displaying digital media.

Busy during the day? Don’t worry, MAF has got you covered. Free events, performances and installations are dotted throughout Melbourne for you to enjoy after work, or on your way into the city for dinner or drinks.

If the travel time northside to Carlton seems too daunting for you, there are plenty of galleries available for perusal closer to home. The Jackman Gallery in St. Kilda boasts works from sculptors, painters and photographers - offering emerging and established artists the chance to display their work. Not far around the corner on Acland Street is the Linden Centre for Contemporary Arts, which is currently running two exhibitions and has several upcoming events, featuring talks with local artists and lively book discussions.
