Healthy Harold Says Ditch the Booze. It’s Ocsober!

Local Community

While this stunning spring weather makes it all-too-tempting to laze the afternoon away with a glass of chilled sauvignon blanc in hand, Life Education (and our old pal Harold) are preaching a sober month. Enter Ocsober. Don’t panic and run away just yet  - C&G are going to walk you through it, and give you some handy tips on getting through the month ‘grog’ free.

Yes, it’s already October, but it’s not too late to jump on the Ocsober bandwagon – we won’t tell anybody you missed a couple of days if you don’t! The idea is simple. Get your friends and family to sponsor you to go sober for the rest of October. All money raised goes to help fund the work of Life Education, which means you’re helping Healthy Harold continue to spread the joy we all miss.

Teaching young Australians about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse is key to reducing the scary statistics surrounding injuries and death due to substance abuse. Teenagers who start drinking before age 15 are five times more likely to become dependent on alcohol than those who don’t start until they are 21, while one Australian dies each week as a result of alcohol consumption – and a further 60 are hospitalised.

By joining in with Ocsober, you can raise money to communicate the risks and dangers of alcohol in young people, and keep Healthy Harold in business!

If you’re a social drinker, fear not. Bayside has some great bars serving mocktails (alcohol-free cocktails) so nobody needs to know you’re off the sauce. St Kilda’s Captain Baxter does a mean Orange Punch and Nojito, while Port Melbourne’s Mr Hobson shakes up an Apple Mosquito and Virgin Sunrise. Ocsober have even provides their own range of mocktail recipes for you to try at home.
