FunWalk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes

Local Community

On Sunday 8th November bright and early at 7.30am, the C&G canopy was erected and used as the registration tent for the JDFR One Walk to Cure Diabetes at Mt Martha. The day was perfect for the 5km and 10km walk. C&G Mt Martha team members Tracey and Angus blew up helium balloons and gave out over 100 balloons to race participants. Tracey and Gus were kept busy with more than 250 race participants visiting our tent. As the walk proceeded down the Esplanade a flurry of orange balloons could be seen as far as the eye could see. Tracey with balloons in hand walked the 5km event and Gus and her 10 year old son ran the 10km challenge.

With over 370 participants, over $11,542.35 has been raised so far online and at the event. Donations are still open, so if you haven't yet donated, please go online to http://www.jdrf.org.au. All money raised is for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Let's do it all over again next year!

JDRF One Walk (formerly Walk to Cure Diabetes) is an annual worldwide event, in its 23rd year that sees around one million people walk together to raise more than $85 million for a world without type 1 diabetes. JDRF Australia CEO Mike Wilson said: “Last year 20,000 Australians participated in JDRF One Walks around the country, raising more than $1 million for type 1 diabetes research. The success of these events is reflective of the passion and support of the type 1 diabetes community,” Mr Wilson said. “Type 1 diabetes is a life-long autoimmune disease that usually occurs in childhood but can be diagnosed at any age. The condition affects more than 120,000 Australians, with approximately 1,825 new diagnoses each year.” “One Walk is a fantastic event that brings together the type 1 community, and our broader supporters, to raise awareness and funds for a condition with no known cure.”

Well done to all the Mt Martha runners and walker
