Everything You Own In A Box To The Left: Moving Day

Local Community

When it comes time to move house, take strength in the knowledge that there are many hours in the day – and that (for a short while) you’re going to be using most of them! The process of moving home is stressful – it’s rated up there with divorce and death – so be kind to yourself and get packing with the same vigour and determination that Beyoncé might. In today’s C&G blog, we offer a few hard-earned pieces of advice on making your moving process (and the big moving day itself) as smooth as possible.

Essentials

Before you move into your new residence, take steps to ensure that your basic facilities are connected: gas, electricity, water and phone or internet. You may need to co-ordinate this with your agent – but the chasing-up will be worthwhile when you can pop on the kettle and connect to WIFI on that very first night in your new home.

Choosing Removalists

As with all things in life, when it comes to removalists – you really get what you pay for. It’s important that your removalists are insured appropriately, and that they are a reputable business you’re happy to have moving your most precious belongings. Their quote will usually encompass call-out fee (to your property) and hourly rate for one, two or more men and their truck. There are businesses that cater for small moves (just one bedroom) through to large mansions – Google is your best friend here to find a matching removalist.

Pack and Label

Whether you have your own boxes or you’re buying them from your mover (you can sell these boxes back in some cases), ensure you have a surplus available! Invariably, you’ll have more belongings than you imagine. When packing, be sensible and don’t make the boxes too heavy. Mix boxes of books with clothing or linens, and go wild on the bubble wrap when it comes to your plates and precious items. Label each box clearly so you know where it should go once you reach your new residence – saving you from heavy carrying in the days to come. Consider moving artworks or valuables in your own car for peace of mind.

Pets

If you have furry friends, moving can be particularly upsetting for them – what with all the new smells, big sounds and new sights. Consider having a friend look after them during the physical move, and then once they’re at your new home – place them in one room so they can become familiar with their surrounds.
