Christmas week lends itself to hours spent on the couch, by the pool, and in a general state of gluttony. With the kids on holidays, why not get your turkey-sated self to a brand-new movie? C&G has rounded up some of the best new releases for Christmas week, and of course, where to catch them on the Southside.

The long anticipated new blockbuster smash from Brad Pitt hits theatres on December 26. Starring alongside Marion Cotillard, the story follows the romance between an intelligence officer and a French resistance fighter in 1942 North Africa. The pressures of war threaten their relationship in this captivating, edge-of-your-seat movie. Catch the advance screening this weekend at Classic Cinema Elsternwick, or find full Christmas week schedules at Palace Cinemas.

Doctor Who – Return of the Doctor Mysterio

The perfect family day out, you can catch it at The Astor on Boxing Day. Where better to enjoy the leftover Chrissy chocolate, right?!

Sing

Think The X Factor, but in a world populated by animals! This charming, witty animation sees a cute koala save his favourite theatre by holding a large singing competition. A great holiday movie for both kids and adults, this fun film starring Matthew McConaughey will leave you laughing and hitting high notes for the rest of the week. Watch at Palace Cinemas.

A United Kingdom

A British period piece of cinematic genius, A United Kingdom is a tale of true love thwarted. When the king of Botswana falls in love with a British woman, they face racism and fierce opposition from both their governments and their families. This defiant and enchanting love story is one man’s quest to marry whom he loves, while convincing a nation of his worthiness for the throne – and it’s all based on a true series of events in British history. If you didn’t catch it at the British Film Festival, now’s your chance. Find the screening times at Palace Cinemas.

Red Dog True Blue

The Australian legend returns! Red Dog True Blue follows the journey of an 11-year-old boy who has been shipped off to remote Western Australia and his grandfather’s cattle farm. He faces a life of sorrow and loneliness, until he strikes an unlikely friendship with a scrappy red canine. Join Mick on his adventures alongside Australia’s favourite dog, at Palace Cinemas across Bayside.

Walt Disney’s newest animation featuring the voices of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick follows a young girl on an oceanic quest. Fulfilling the unfinished business of her ancestors, Moana navigates a plethora of creatures and obstacles supported by the demi-god, Maui. This perfect uplifting holiday animation is screening at Palace Cinemas from Boxing Day.
