C&Gs Guide to Art on the Southside

Local Community

Melbourne is a city buzzing with dynamic, world-class art and culture. Luckily for Bayside residents and visitors - the southside is home to some of the very best! Here is C&G’s guide to the art and culture around the bay.

Linden New Art

Linden New Art is a brilliant, not-for-profit, contemporary gallery located in the heart of St Kilda. With a wonderful mission – to support and mentor artists, connect with the community and exhibit talented mid-career artists – Linden New Art houses superb work and focuses on making their space sustainable. Whilst the gallery is usually located in a gorgeous Victorian mansion on Acland Street, you can temporarily find Linden in Domain House, South Yarra while the mansion gets some TLC.

Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery

A scenic coastal drive south will deliver you to the picturesque Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery – their latest collection of exhibitions are dedicated to girl power. Celebrating works by the very talented and inspiring 'Leading Ladies of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow', the creations of Minna Gilligan, Constance Stokes and Gosia Wlodarczak will be on display until September. This one is not to be missed.

Jewish Museum of Australia

Another St Kilda-based gem is the Jewish Museum of Australia. The Jewish Museum hosts a range of exhibitions, lectures, tours and special events year-round, working to build a society in which cultural diversity and difference is embraced and respected. With so much on over July and August alone, it’s worth checking out their full program here and plotting a weekend visit.

The Gallery at Bayside Arts & Cultural Centre

Currently showing Robert Lindsay’s Fictitious Realities - an exploration of unusual and captivating artworks that play with scale – the Gallery at Bayside Arts and Cultural Centre is an excellent one to wander through on a winter’s day. The Gallery, as well as the entire Bayside Arts and Cultural Precinct, will also be on show as part of Open House Melbourne Weekend 2017 on the 29th-30th July. Add this one to your schedule for the perfect weekend of perusing!

Whether it is portraits, sculptures, or relics from the past you’re eager to discover, the Bayside arts scene has all bases covered. The C&G team are always looking for excuses to explore the cultural precincts of the southside – so let us know your favorites!
