C&G’s Guide to the Best Bayside BBQs

What’s a summer without picnics in the park, warm evenings and a good old Aussie BBQ? C&G has rounded up some of the best picnic-ready spots in and around Bayside with BBQs available for public use.

Load up the Esky, pack your chilled meats, tomato sauce, napkins and the squarest bread you can get your hands on – it’s time to pitch up at one of these sublime Bayside BBQ spots with your family and friends.

St Kilda

Catani Gardens are neatly perched just beside St Kilda’s shores. While not the largest open space on the block, there’s certainly plenty of secluded nooks, BBQs and bench spots to go round. Packed full of St Kilda’s signature palm trees and offering direct access to the sand, it’s the ideal spot to let the hours pass you by as you gaze over the ocean and cityscape. The Edwardian-style central rotunda provides shelter from the rays, too, and you’re just a short distance from Fitzroy Street’s amenities.

Not far from here sits Albert Park Lake. Scattered around the 5km walking, running and cycling track that follows the water’s edge are public BBQs, shelters, water stations and bathrooms – letting you soak up the lakeside views in any light.

Brighton

The Beach Road foreshore offers public BBQ and picnic spaces for the perfect beachside cookoff. The stretch of public land between Brighton and Sandringham provides several versatile spaces, with playgrounds, shaded areas and toilets placed along the coastline for convenience.

Elwood

Take advantage of both land and sea at Elwood’s top BBQ locales. Complement your barbie feast with some fresh, salty air at Elwood Park just moments from the beach, or take some time out at Elsternwick Park. The 37-hectare space is broken up into a number of areas, for organised team sports, a playpark and the picturesque lake – you won’t be short of the perfect BBQ backdrop.

Port Melbourne

Port Melbourne’s Westgate Park may be little more to you than a view swiftly enjoyed when  stuck in traffic on the Westgate Bridge. Little did you know, it’s one of the best public BBQ spots in Melbourne! Relax by fresh and saltwater lakes, spot the local wildlife – pelicans, spoonbills and lorikeets have been known to dwell there – and soak up the city skyline views, all among the lush greenery of the park.

Of course, these are Chisholm and Gamon’s favourite picks but if you’re looking for something we haven’t mentioned, check out Meat in a Park – an online tool to locate the nearest public BBQs. Did somebody say snag!? Snap us your Bayside cookoff photos on Facebook and Twitter
