Returning for its 17th year, the Lavazza Italian Film Festival (LIFF) is back in Melbourne this month! The biggest public celebration of Italian cinema outside Italy - you’re spoiled for choice with this year’s festival line up. Take your pick from comedic classics, dynamic dramas and grand romances. Mark your calendar for the 14th of September to the 8th of October and check out C&G’s must-see Italian films of the festa below.

An Opening Night Special

In true Italian style – there will be a variety of celebrations across the city to ring in the opening night of this highly anticipated festa! While it’s best to browse the festival website for full opening night details, C&G are happy to suggest some of our favorites on the Southside. The Astor Theatre are kicking off their Opening Night Gala with Italian Golden Globe-winning film Let Yourself Go! followed by an official afterparty. Let Yourself Go! will also be debuting at Brighton Bay, Como and Balwyn cinema locations with various live music performances and Italian delights to enjoy. And for the Italian cinema enthusiasts planning on joining the party at Kino or Westgarth theatres -  you’ll be treated to a viewing of Venice Film Festival award-winner Indivisible.

For a Giggle

The writer/director of the 2015 LIFF Opening Night film God Willing returns in 2017 with new film, It’s All About Karma. This is a brilliant comedy starring two of Italy’s finest talents – Fabio De Luigi and Elio Germano. This film brings back everything that made God Willing such a hit, with many more laughs in store!

Nonna’s Night

This documentary is the perfect choice for a date night with Nonna! Sea Dreaming Girls is a gorgeous film about discovering new things and living a joyful life at any age. This film charts the adventures of a lively group of Nonnas who have never seen the sea. An enjoyable adventure for all.

Closing Night Film: Life Is Beautiful

It’s the Oscar-winning masterpiece that brought the gorgeous saying ‘La vita è bella’ into our lives. Life is Beautiful returns to the big screen for its 20th anniversary, wishing the Italian Film Festival goodbye for another year. Gather at one of the many Palace Cinema locations and celebrate with a delicious Italian beverage and sweet treat in hand to close the 2017 festival in style.
